Malasaña

Malasana is immensely popular and widely known as the hippest and most trendy part of town. These streets are lined with the city’s coolest bars and cafes and fill up especially on the weekend with students from all over the city. The nightlife in Malasaña is slightly grungy as most of the bars and music venues are divey and play rock, reggae and anything other than contemporary pop music. During the day it’s a treasure trove of vintage shops, cool boutiques, the city’s best tattoo shops run by young local designers and laid-back cafés and restaurants.Looking back in time, you will discover a very interesting story to this area of the city. Malasana was the centre of the Movida Madrileña, a countercultural movement that developed after the death of dictator Francisco Franco. The main scare Plaza de Dos Mayo, was home to the battle in 1802 when the Madrileños rose against Napoleon on the same day. In the 80s, Malasaña was a rough-around-the-edges hotbed of bars, drugs and nightlife. It is often referred to the East Village of Madrid.
