The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is a great example of Spain’s gorgeous Baroque architecture. Still used for official ceremonies and residence it is no longer the royal family’s home. Today, the King lives in Zarzuela Palace, which is just outside of Madrid. The Italian Filippo Juvara was commissioned to design the new palace yet after his death his pupil Juan Bautista Sachetti finalized the plans to create a grand palace similar to Versailles. All construction was vaulted in stone and brick, not wood, so that any fire could destroy it.
