Chamberi

Visiting Chamberi will give you a glimpse at the everyday life in Madrid. This district was the place of residence of many aristocrats in the past two centuries. The best place to enjoy this way of living is the beautiful Plaza de Olavide, a meeting point for the senior residence of this neighborhood, meeting up on the park benches, playing with they grand children at the playground. All around this square the bars and restaurant “terraza” are crowded with friends meeting for tapas especially when the sun is shining. Another great experience is the Andén Cero-Estación de Chamberi, an old tube station that was closed in 1969 and converted to a visitor centre of Madrid’s underground system showing the first underground line from 1919, running across the center of the townChamberí boasts beautiful architecture–some of its buildings are absolutely gorgeous (Museo Soroya, Instituto Internacional). Calle Zurbano has been described in the New York Times as "one of the best in Europe", a street splattered with mansions, boutiques, restaurants. On Sunday you should definitely visit Calle de Fuencarral, a street closed to traffic, turning into a popular localtion for a family stroll. Another surprise is Santander Park the largest green area in Chamberí, making golf facilities available in the very heart of Madrid.
